Switching up and down modes?

Is there anyway to switch up and down modes without taking out the batteries and mango.  Say if i was in five and wanted to go to three is there a simple and easy way to do that presides turning the controller on and off.

What controller are you using, xbox360 or ps3?

You can just keep cycling through modes with the sync button. No need to turn off the controller, just press the sync button.
